Family Home Program

We need you because they need you.

Become a family home provider with Pathways...the rewards are endless.

What are family homes?

Family homes offer opportunities, independence and enhanced quality of life to adults with an acquired brain injury or developmental disability when they are able to live in a stable, supportive home with a family.

The family home provider program matches an adult with a developmental disability or an acquired brain injury with a family in the community. Following a rigorous assessment and approval process that includes assessing shared interests, compatibility, location and access to services, a supported person lives with the family and shares in their lives.

A family home provider receives compensation, training and professional support from Pathways to Independence. But, more than that, they receive the opportunity to help a person to live more independently in the community. As many of our family home providers will tell you...”the rewards are endless”.

Selection process and criteria

To ensure everyone's satisfaction the selection process to become a family home provider is very thorough. Every family home that is a part of the Pathways to Independence Family Home program is assessed against the following criteria:

  1. Is your home safe and accessible?
  2. This will include fire safety inspections and accessibility requirements based on the needs of the individual.
  3. Is the whole family aware of the implications and willing to welcome an additional person into their home?
    • What kind of lifestyle does the family enjoy and aspire to?
    • Does the family have similar interests and hobbies to the potential resident?
    • How many people are currently living in the home?
    • Are the family members over the age of 18 able to pass a criminal reference check?

Reference checks from people who know the family well and can attest to their suitability to be a family home provider.
